Karen McGreevey - Started My Own Business 2 Years Ago http://www.konceptuality.com
1) What do you believe makes you special or interesting? - I entered the "own my own business" arena two years ago.
- As a "two year old" virtual assistant, I’ve written numerous articles about the virtual assistant industry and internet marketing, as well as an e-book for the “older/baby boomer generation”: it’s a light-hearted look at how to start an internet business: “Put Your Old On Hold: A Baby Boomer’s Unconventional Guide to the Making of a Dot Com Business” .
- I’m willing to try new things and haven’t found a computer yet I didn’t like or want to get to know. Although, I’ve managed to have a few issues with one or two at times.
2) What kind of effect have you had, or would like to have on the world? I’m known for my positive attitude; my (figurative) “cheerleading” and willingness to help others.
3) What events shaped or changed your life? There are two specific events: A health issue 38 years ago that required major surgery, and more recently, the unexpected office reorganization where I was employed that resulted in my loss of a job. Even though I had been at that business for 26 years.
4) Did you overcome obstacles - take risks - get lucky? Most of us can’t get to be the age we are (like me at 67) without having some form of ailments. I’ve been fortunate enough to overcome my health challenge, which is now so much a part of me it’s almost like it never happened.
The risk I took? Most notably, I started my own business -- and one using the Internet at that. Doing so, because I really wasn’t ready to hit the usual activities circuit that senior citizens do. In fact, “senior citizen” to me is all those other people, not me!
5) What have you done that no one would guess you'd done upon first meeting you? I enrolled in college when I was 46, I was working full-time. Six years later -- in 1992 -- I earned my B.A. in Human Services. It took longer because I continued to work full-time and because I took one or two classes at a time. I went on the “pay as you go plan”…if I couldn’t pay, I didn’t go. When I graduated, I had absolutely no college debt.
I went to New York on a blind date -- I mean I purchased an airplane ticket to fly to New York to go on a date with someone I had not met, nor had I seen his picture. This was not an Internet hookup -- it happened when I was in my early 20s -- long before there was such a thing as the Internet. Actually, my cousin and her husband lived in New York and arranged the date for me with their friend.
6) What is still left to be done in your life? - Clean my house – it’s been on the low end of my priorities for some time now. - Continuing to remain physically active and staying mind-motivated, looking for new challenges. - I love the Social Media and Marketing techniques, which I’m currently learning: FaceBook, LinkedIn, web analytics, blogging. I will now offer the research, analysis and usage as a new niche in my business.
